Wall Street Journal Article Shows Cannabis May Offer Relief for Chronic Lower Back Pain

Chronic lower back pain affects more than 70 million adults in the U.S. and remains a leading cause of disability. Treatment options are often limited, but new research highlighted in the Wall Street Journal suggests that cannabis-based medication may offer meaningful relief.

Recent clinical research involving more than 1,100 patients found that a THC-dominant cannabis extract provided greater relief from chronic lower back pain than placebo or opioids. Patients also reported improved sleep and function, experienced no withdrawal symptoms, and for many, the benefits lasted up to a year. Additional studies showed that cannabis offered stronger pain relief than opioids with fewer side effects and without the need for increasing doses. While the medication tested is expected to debut in Europe first, these findings may help guide U.S. patients and doctors exploring cannabis-based pain management.
